Good Boundaries, Good Ancestors.
Dear Good Ancestors,
I recently had the pleasure of being in conversation with my dear friend and sister Leesa Renee Hall on her podcast, Inner Field Trip. The episode is called Why Anti-Racism Educators Have Strong Boundaries Around Their Time, Energy, and Abilities, and I really recommend giving it a listen.
I love being in conversation with Leesa, so it’s no surprise that when I re-listened to our episode after it aired I thought, “I wanna do this again. But this time, in community!”.
Boundaries are one of my favourite topics to talk about, and I love to talk about them with friends like Leesa who value them as much as I do. I don’t just value them because of the work that I do, but also because of the life I wish to lead. I strongly believe that part of being a good ancestor is having good boundaries. Which is why I am so excited to share with you today a free event that Leesa and I are co-hosting for both of our Patreon communities.
First, a little context!
Leesa and I became friends in 2017 around the same time that articles that we had both written about white supremacy went viral. We connected and have been sisters ever since. We are both highly sensitive, introverted Black women, focused on doing thought leadership work that helps us to do liberation work from the inside out, so that we can create a better world.
Over the years we have shared our journeys together, and started a tradition of meeting once a year in the US for some in-person sister time (the picture in the graphic for this post was shot in November 2019 in New York where Leesa and I spent the day together). Though it’s unclear/unlikely that an in-person catch-up will be possible this year, we are still intent on staying connected and staying in thoughtful conversation. And this month, we want to invite you to be a part of that conversation.
We would love to have you join us for Good Boundaries, Good Ancestors, a fireside chat with myself and Leesa on Thursday 15th April at 1pm Toronto / 8pm Qatar (10am PT / 1pm ET / 6pm UK).
This event is completely free to everyone who is a patron in both of our Patreon communities, and is a way for us to say thank you for their continued spiritual, emotional, and financial support. Patreon is a space where both Leesa and I are focused on creating intentional content and community that are filled with hope and healing. We are forever grateful to the people who choose to support our work through Patreon, and would like to extend this fireside chat to our patrons as a celebratory way of saying thank you.
In this fireside chat, Leesa and I will talk about:
The difference between fear-based boundaries vs love-based boundaries
Why Leesa and I no longer state or post their boundaries on social media (something both of us did early in our journeys)
3 things that help Leesa and I stay true to our boundaries whether it’s to someone who wishes us well - or not
The big clues that help us know when we’re dealing with manipulative, narcissistic, or toxic personalities so we don’t get entangled with them
Plus other boundary strengthening tips for Good Ancestors and Brave Stumblers
If you would like to be a part of this conversation, we invite you to join either mine or Leesa’s Patreon communities (or even better, both!) at any tier.
We have made the intentional decision not to make this event open to the wider public because we want to go deep and be completely vulnerable with our communities who hold our openness with such care. We really want this to be an event for folks who choose to be in community with us. Once you’ve joined our Patreon pages, navigate to our recent posts about this event for registration instructions.
If you are not able to attend the live call, a time-limited replay will be available to view.
Lastly, as an added bonus, we will be hosting a free follow up Q&A call on Thursday 22 April for our patrons pledged at $5 and above. Registration details for that event will be postedf for our patrons after the first event.
We hope you’ll join us for what will undoubtedly be an inspiring and nourishing conversation on how we can have better boundaries so that we can become better ancestors.
